I hesitate to share the story of how this project came to be because I worry that I'll be revealing one of Portland's best-kept secrets when it comes to AirBnB's and, selfishly, I want this place to still be available for me to stay there whenever I'm in town!
Last summer when I traveled down to Oregon for Renegade Craft Fair in Portland, I decided to treat myself with a stay at the Alameda Carriage House Airbnb. It had amazing reviews and looked so charming in the photos.
It was even better in person. From the personalized welcome sign, to the soft jazz and lavender essential oil diffuser that greeted me upon entering the space, to the binder filled with historical information about the property, I knew I'd made the right decision. The studio was located upstairs in the carriage house on the grounds of a beautiful Portland home, one hundred years old and on the National Register of Historic Places. It had been beautifully renovated in a way that preserved the historical details of the space while bringing in modern amenities.
As luck would have it, I briefly had the opportunity to meet one of the owners as I arrived and we chatted about me being in town for Renegade and my work as an illustrator. He lit up and mentioned that he'd been wanting to have a logo and sign designed for the home.
A month or so later, we got back in touch and I was pleased to get started on this special watercolor illustration commission. What a wonderful way to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the home!
With soft watercolor Georgian details and each brick painted one-by-one, I felt extra connected to this house as I built it up with my brush on paper. I'm pleased with the finished design that combines my own Pacific Northwest outdoorsy style with the historical elegance of the Alameda Carriage House.
