My favorite surprise of my summer road trip was on the way from Glacier National Park to Missoula, Montana. After hearing my disappointment about not seeing any bison at Yellowstone, my sister mentioned that I should visit the National Bison Range. This is a wildlife preserve with a scenic dirt road drive that runs through it in the summer. As soon as I left the visitor center and started to drive along the road I saw this:
There were so many bison!
Look at the babies!
After making it through the bison herd, I continued along the scenic drive up through the hills. At the top of Red Mountain were two stops where visitors are allowed to get out of the car for a quick hike. This was my view on the short, grasshopper-filled, walk along the Bitteroot Trail.
Besides bison, there were plenty of other wildlife to view from the road. This pronghorn was calmly munching on some thistle while looking out towards the Montana landscape below.
If you ever happen to be in the Glacier area of Montana, I can't recommend National Bison Range enough. It was definitely my favorite surprise of the summer!
